The #2 ranked Timpson Bears varsity football team hosted the #4 Beckville Bearcats in what many thought would be a close season opening game. The Bears were able to come away with a blowout 50-13 win to open regular season play.

Beckville opened up the game with a short-lived drive which was derailed by a sack at the 11- minute mark by Bears JJ Garner and Baylor Kimbro.

Timpson then drove 80 yards on a nine-play scoring drive which saw Vosky Howard rush the final 5 yards for the Bears first touchdown. Tyler Lane added the first of six successful extra-point kicks this night and THS led 7-0 with 6:41 left in the first quarter.

Beckville next scored on a 9-play drive that saw quarterback Calan Castle go into the endzone from 5-yards out to pull the Bearcats to within 7-6 with 1:42 left in the opening period. The BHS 2-point conversion attempt failed and Timpson held a 1-point advantage at the start of the second quarter.

Cameron Bennett recovered a Bearcats fumble at the THS 42-yard line, with 10:40 left in the second period, and Timpson went on a 4-play 58-yard scoring drive which was capped by Garner with a keeper run for a 2-yard touchdown with 8:59 left in the second quarter. Garner added a 2-point conversion run and the Bears held a 15-6 advantage.

The Bearcats were forced to punt the ball back to the Bears late in the first half. On second and goal at the 4-yard line, Garner added his third touchdown with just 19 seconds remaining before halftime. Lanes extra point kick gave Timpson a 22-6 lead at halftime.

In the second half JJ Garner scored his fourth touchdown on a 41-yard keeper for a score to put the Bears up 29-6, after another Lane extra point kick with 7:47 left third quarter.

Garner scored his fifth touchdown from 60 yards out with 7:25 still left in the third period. Lane booted another extra point and THS led Beckville 36-6.

Garner hit Amare Bruton for a 35-yard touchdown reception with 4:48 still left in the third stanza and Timpson led 43-6 after a Lane extra point kick.

Later Bearcat Jorden Prince scored on a 44-yard touchdown run and Aiden Brantley added a Bearcats extra point with 10:45 left in the fourth period. This cut Timpson’s lead to 43-13.

Timpson got a 3-yard touchdown run from Chris Nickleberry with 5:07 left in the contest and another Lane extra point kick gave THS a 50-13 lead which held up for the remainder of the contest.

The Bears will play the Jefferson Bulldogs next Friday, September 1, 2023 at Jefferson’s Bulldog Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
