Bears Stun Defending Champ Bremond Tigers in Area Playoff

Palestine Westwood High School. November 25, 2017 –

The Timpson Bears Varsity Football Team erased any chance the Bremond Tigers had of a four-peat state championship run in 2017. The three-time Class 2A Division II Champions fell to the Bears, on Friday, by a 14-11 score.

The Bears drew first blood when quarterback Jon Grogan hit Receiver Gannon Braddock with a pass which went for a 43-yard touchdown with 3:14 remaining in the first half of play. Jordan Osby added a 2-point conversion run which put Timpson up by an 8-0 score.

Bremond started the next drive from their own 30-yard line and they moved the ball to the Bears 9-yard line before the drive stalled, and Bremond settled for a 24-yard field goal, by Gerardo Ponce, with just seconds left before the midway intermission at halftime. The teams headed to the break with Timpson leading Bremond by an 8-3 score.

The Timpson defense held in the red zone on three occasions during the contest and forced 3 Tiger turnovers which helped in the cause. Bremond’s frustration showed with the team accumulating five penalties for 75 yards. Timpson also held on two fourth down conversion attempts which stalled crucial BHS drives.

Timpson took a 14-3 lead on a 90-yard scoring drive which saw Grogan hit Brock Behrens on a 16-yard pass which gave the Bears a 14-3 lead with 1.57 left in the third quarter.

The final score came when Kaidyn Parelez capped a Bremond drive with a 15-yard scoring run near the end of the third period. Moments later he made a 2-point conversion run which cut the Bears’ lead to 14-11 with 10 seconds left in the third stanza.

Both teams’ defenses held each other in check during the final period. It appeared for a moment Timpson would punt the ball back to Bremond with mere seconds remaining in the contest, but, a roughing the punter penalty on the Tigers eliminated any chance BHS would have to make a comeback.

Timpson had ten first downs during the game. Bremond gained 12 first downs. Timpson completed nine of fifteen passing attempts for 115 yards. Bremond completed five passes on ten attempts for 47 yards. Timpson rushed for 143 yards. Bremond rushed for 177 yards on the night.

Bremond’s season ended with them posting a 10-2 record. Timpson is now at 10-2 and will face fellow District 11 competitor Grapeland on Friday, December 1,2017, at Rusk Eagles Stadium. Three District 11 Class 2A Division II teams remain. Tenaha the #1 seed beat Dallas Gateway. Timpson and Grapeland are the #2 and #3 seeds.
