Center Varsity Basketball Teams Compete with Visiting Jasper

The Center Roughriders and Lady Roughriders each competed in District 9 Class 4A varsity basketball contest with Jasper, on Tuesday, at Center High School.

The Lady Roughriders used solid defense to hold the Jasper Lady Bulldogs to just six points during the first quarter and Center took a 11-6 advantage into the second period. Center also outscored Jasper in the second stanza and they took a 10-point advantage into the halftime intermission while leading 23-13.

The third period saw Jasper bounce back to within six points and Center went into the fourth quarter leading 32-26. The Lady ‘Riders outpaced the Lady ‘Dogs 16-14 in the final frame to take a 48-40 conference win.

Center was led by Beyonce Bell with 13 points, Jasper was led by Shabralyn Watson with 20 points.

The win gives Center a 3-2 conference mark with three District 9 4A games remaining. The Lady ‘Riders are currently in third place trailing Jasper, 4-1, after handing them their first loss. Carthage is in second with a 3-1 mark.

The boy’s varsity matchup was close early and had many lead changes until Jasper pulled away midway in the second quarter. Jasper led 32-26 at halftime, 49-38 at the end of the third period, and they eventually won this contest by a 60-54 final score.

Center was led by Makel Johnson with 21 points. Teammates, Jamarrion Evans scored 13 and Jumarcus McCollister had 12, Jasper was led by Jermario Thomas Jr. with 12 points.

The Roughriders are in third place with a 1-2 mark. Carthage leads the District with a 3-0 conference record.

The ‘Riders and Lady ‘Riders will travel to Huntington next Friday, January 31, 2020. Subvarsity action begins at 4:30 p.m. with varsity game to follow.
