March 9, 2023 - Recently My Sister, Myself an organization of 8th grade girls at Center Middle School, spent the weekend in Seabrook Texas after initially touring SFA University in Nacogdoches on Friday Morning. Dr. Sharon Rice, a professor with SFA and a former educator with CMS, have greeted this group of young ladies and their sponsors for the past 3 years. Activities have included giving the girls a tour of the campus, visiting the planetarium and sharing vital information about the application process as well as types of financial aid available to them. The girls then traveled on to Houston where they worked a 3 hour shift at the largest food bank in the country, packing bags for "backpack buddies" which services needy school children in 18 different counties.
On Saturday they visited Moody Gardens' Rainforest, Aquarium and saw a 3-D movie about sea life. Afterwards they got a chance to take a ferry ride, saw porpoises and several other species of birds and wildlife in their natural habitat. To end the weekend, the group visited NASA Johnson Space Center on Sunday before returning home. There were also some lighthearted moments with the girls visiting Baybrook Mall, swimming in the Hotel swimming pool and making a stop at Buccees.
They were commended for their conduct and pleasantries by the hotel's owner and management. This year's trip was made possible thanks in part to our generous citizens of Shelby County donating to 1 or both of the 2 roadblocks we had on the square in November and February.
Some other very special patrons deserve our appreciation also. Thanks to Tony & Traci Willoughby, John & Josh Burns, Jen Ihlo, Toni Ford, Nicholle Ellington, Ashley & Ben Wulf, Jennifer Tomlin, Mike & Penny Bird, Greg and Stacy Spruiell, Kathy Massey, Gladys Bailey Andrews and H.E.B.(Carthage)
Shelby County YOU ROCK!
