Shelbyville Dragons Stadium on Friday, September 26, 2025 –
Shelbyville high school’s varsity football team is now 1-4 after earning their first season win on Friday. They defeated the visiting Carlisle Indians by a 38-34 score. Carlisle now stands at 2-3 for the year.
The Dragons opening offensive drive covered 69 yards in 8 plays. Junior Hunter Harvey capped the drive with a 9-yard touchdown run. Sophomore kicker Edwin Vasquez added on an extra point kick which gave SHS a 7-0 point lead at the 9:12 minute mark of the first quarter.
The Indians answered when their opening offensive drive went 58-yards in 6-plays and junior quarterback Ivan Garza scored on a 6-yard keeper run for a touchdown. Garza added the point after kick and tied the game at 7-7 with 6:51 remaining in the first frame.
The next Dragons drive only took two plays and saw sophomore quarterback Gavin McDonald hit junior Bryant Scarbrough for a 39-yard scoring strike. The ensuing extra point attempt failed and SHS had a 13-7 lead at the 5:37 mark of the first stanza.
Carlisles second drive covered 68-yards and ended with another Garza keeper run for a touchdown on first-and-goal at the 1-yardline. Garza’s extra point kick was good and CHS held a 14-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Dragons junior Segio Reyes forced a fumble early in the second frame which junior Ronnie Williams alertly covered at the Carlisle 18-yardline. Williams scored shortly after on a 9-yard touchdown run which gave the Dragons a 21-18 lead after, junior Dallas Murry added on a 2-point conversion run at the 5:51 minute mark.
Vasquez was able to extend the Dragons lead to 24-14 with a 23-yard field goal with just 45 seconds left before halftime.
Early in the third quarter Garza cut Shelbyville’s lead to 24-21 when he scored an Indians touchdown on a 3-yard keeper run. The Dragons fumbled on their next possession and Juan Luna recovered for the Indians at the 9:17 mark.
Harvey intercepted an Indians pass with 8:30 left in the third frame and gave SHS possession of the football at their own 27-yardline. Harvey scored on an 8-yard touchdown reception from McDonald at the 2:28 mark of the third period and Vasquez added another point after kick to give SHS a 31-21 lead.
Garza scored again at the 1:18 mark but the Indians extra point attempt was blocked. Shelbyville led 31-27 going into the final period.
Garza capped a 70-yard Indians scoring drive with a 4-yard touchdown run and an extra point kick conversion to give CHS their last lead at 34-31 with 6:43 left in the game.
Williams capped a 72-yard scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run and a Vasquez point after kick gave Shelbyville a 38-34 lead.
Carlisle’s final offensive drive ended with a turnover on downs and SHS was able to kneel out the remaining clock with seconds left in the contest.
The Dragons will next travel to Garrison’s Bulldog Stadium on October 10, 2025 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Garrison is 2-2 and they had a bye week on Friday. This game will kickoff District 11 2A-1 conference play for both teams.
