The Shelbyville Dragons varsity baseball team earned a 13-4 run District 23 2A win over the Joaquin Rams on Tuesday. The win improves the Dragon’s season mark to 11-5-1 and their conference record stands at 5-1. The Rams are at 9-6 this season and 3-3 in the conference.

Joaquin scored first when Jake Neal reached on an infield hit in the bottom of the first inning. He was driven home on a TJ Hawkins single to leftfield and an outfielder’s error. Joaquin extended their lead to 2-0 runs in the bottom of the third inning when Hawkins doubled to drive in Carter Graves who started off the inning by drawing a walk. Shelbyville started the third frame with two baserunners reaching and no outs but Joaquin turned a triple play to end the inning.

The top of the fourth inning saw the Dragons bounce back to tie the game at 2-2 runs when Tate Obregon legged out an infield hit and Hunter Harvey and Dallas Murry walked and loaded the basepath. A Bryant Scarbrough single to leftfield scored Obregon and Harvey to tie the game.

The top of the fifth inning proved disastrous for the Rams as a Gus Duvon double, four walks, a hit batter and a fielder’s choice led to Shelbyville having ten batters come to the plate and the Dragons took an 8-2 run lead before Joaquin could end the inning. JHS bounced back to cut the SHS lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth with scores from Tate Bass and Kaden Miller.

Duvon walked with one out in the top of the sixth inning and later scored on a double to right-centerfield by Obregon which extended the Dragon’s lead to 9-4 runs.

Shelbyville rallied again in the top of the seventh to score the game’s final four runs and extend the final score to 13-4.

Dallas Murry pitched all seven innings for the Dragons and struck out ten batters and walked two. Joaquin used four pitchers who gave up twelve hits, struck out six collectively and walked nine.

Joaquin will travel to Garrison on Friday, March 28, 2025 for a 6:30 p.m. game at Bulldogs Ballpark. GHS is 7-0 in the conference.

Shelbyville will host the San Augustine Wolves for a 6 p.m. game at Dragons Ballpark on Friday, March 28. The Wolves are winless in District 23 2A play.
