Center Roughrider Coliseum on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 –
The Shelbyville Dragons varsity basketball team have improved their season record to 26-3 with a 55-43 win over the Beckville Bearcats (17-12). The win was a Bi-District round elimination in the 2024-25 Texas UIL Class 2A Basketball State Playoffs.
Beckville led early but Shelbyville fought back to lead 6-4 points midway through the first period. At the buzzer sending the game to the second quarter SHS led 13-11. The second period saw SHS leading 17-13 at the midpoint and they gained a 24-19 advantage by the halftime intermission.
The third quarter saw the Dragons outpace Beckville 16-14 points with 4 minutes remaining in the period and they carried a 40-33 lead into the final period. The Dragons were able to gain a 15-10 scoring advantage during the fourth quarter to gain the 55-43 win and advance to the Area round of the playoffs.
Shelbyville was led by senior guards Ja’Davian Mathis with 24 points and DJ Barnes had 15. Beckville was led by junior guard Braxton Bullock with 12 points.
The Dragons will next face the 23-5 Overton Mustangs who beat Union Grove 65-44. A date and venue have not been released yet.
