November Newsletter

November Meeting
The November meeting is Saturday, November 10, at 10am at the Sam Samford Lodge in Center. The Founders Day brunch is a remembrance ceremony honoring Betty Ballinger and Hally Bryan and the ladies who, on November 6, 1891, organized the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Hostesses for the month are Alease Copelin, Patricia Harrison, Elizabeth Pate and Maggie Casto.
The business meeting will follow the brunch and ceremony. We will complete plans for the upcoming November 30 fundraiser, chili lunch on the square. Billie Dawson will have samples of chili for tasting so we’ll make the same recipe. Since we’re not doing the Pinecone and Mistletoe Christmas Market this year, we will have a series of smaller fundraisers to benefit our scholarship fund.

Upcoming Opportunities
The bandstand on the square and our First Ladies Building have been painted and some repairs on windows sills and door frames have been made. The building looks good. Now comes the cleanup. We put the pictures in tubs, packed the Travelin’ Trunk items and covered everything else with plastic sheeting to try to keep the dust out. Now, we get to re-hang the pictures, put Trunk stuff on shelves and remove the plastic. But first, everything needs dusting, sweeping and cleaning. We’ll be setting up a work schedule at the meeting Saturday. Everything needs to finished before the chili lunch on the thirtieth.

As for the chili lunch, (November 30) we’ll need cooks (all will use the same recipe), drivers (we plan to deliver to businesses that place orders for five or more lunches), people to serve and people to do “other tasks as needed.” Plan to help where you can. Our scholarship fund needs you. More details at the meeting.

On Tuesday, November 27, the membership committee will have a “Climbing Your Family Tree” lineage day at the Fannie Brown Booth Library in Center from 1:00 until 3:00 (or 4:00). The first part will be on basic genealogy research, the last part on finding your Republic of Texas ancestors. If this sounds interesting or if you have research questions, come join us.

Saturday, December 1, is the 2018 Christmas parade in Center. We plan to decorate the DRT building while we’re doing the cleanup and hold an open house prior to the parade from 4:00 – 6:00. Sheri Riley plans to have the Courthouse open for tours and Allison Harbison thought we might like to show our building.

Our annual Christmas luncheon/meeting will be Saturday, December 8 at noon. Don’t miss the time change. The DRT, SRT and CRT will hold a joint meeting. Johnnie McWilliams, our District Representative, will be our special guest. As usual, we will have our toy drive. More later.

New Members
Five prospective members are working on their applications now and I know of at least four of our members working on supplements. Isn’t our family history fun to learn. And Texas history is even more interesting than any John Wayne movie.

Pledge To The Texas Flag
Honor the Texas flag.
I pledge to thee, Texas,
One state under God
One and indivisible

Texas, Our Texas
Texas, our Texas! All hail the might state.
Texas, our Texas, so wonderful, so great.
Boldest and grandest, withstanding every test.
O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.

God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong
That you may grow in power and worth,
Throughout the ages long.
(Repeat chorus)
