Fundraiser Being Held for Survivors of Caddo Mounds Tornado

May 8, 2019 - Stephen F. Austin State University’s student chapter of the National Association for Interpretation (NAI) is hosting an evening of sharing stories from the Caddo Mounds Tornado and a screening of the PBS documentary “Koot-Hoot Kiwat: The Caddo Grass House”.

The event starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 11th and will be held in the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the SFA Gardens Pineywoods Native Plant Center at 2900 Raguet Street in Nacogdoches. The event will benefit those injured and impacted during the EF-3 tornado that struck Caddo Mounds State Historic Site April 13th during the annual Caddo Culture Day Festival.

Following the half hour documentary screening, survivors will share stories of the tornado that demolished the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site museum, injured dozens, and resulted in one fatality. Some survivors have large medical bills and there are lost vehicles and Caddo Art that will not be covered by insurance. A $20 donation is requested to attend the event. Guests can use cash or donate directly to the online fundraiser at: fundly.com/support-caddo-mounds-survivors.

SFA Student President of NAI, Brendan Leland, reflected on the strong ties his group has with the Mounds community. “NAI has had a strong relationship with the community at Caddo Mounds for as long as I can remember.  Every semester my fellow students and colleagues volunteer to help with various events at Caddo Mounds. It saddens me to see such a terrible disaster fall upon such wonderful people. We will be doing what we can to help this amazing community of Caddo people, students and volunteers in their time of need.”

Overflow parking is available adjacent to the event at Raguet Elementary School. For more information contact Jocelyn Moore at 936-205-7180 or Jocelyn.n.moore@gmail.com or visit the Friends of Caddo Mounds Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/286376342244891/
