Greg Grant to Speak on Woodpeckers at Library Lecture Series

May 20, 2021 - The Smith County Master Gardeners have once again partnered with Tyler’s Carnegie Public Library to offer the “Master Gardeners at the Library” lecture series, focusing on relevant gardening topics for Smith County and the surrounding area.

The final speaker is Greg Grant, Smith County horticulturist for the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Tyler. Mr. Grant will be speaking on “The Hole Truth-the Woodpeckers of East Texas” via Zoom Friday, May 21 at 11:30 am. Grant is author of Texas Fruit and Vegetable Gardening, Heirloom Gardening in the South, and The Rose Rustlers, and oversees the Rebel Eloy Emanis Pine Savanna and Bird Sanctuary in his own backyard. He is a lifetime member of the Texas Bluebird Society, The Native Plant Society of Texas, and The Big Thicket Society, and received the 2017 Lone Star Land Steward Award from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Grant will talk about our 8 species of native woodpeckers and how important they are as keystone species in our landscapes. In addition to controlling tree killing insects, they also provide critical homes for secondary cavity dwellers like bluebirds, chickadees, nuthatches, and titmice.

The presentation is Friday, May 21 at 11:30 am. For the Zoom link go to the Smith County Master Gardener website https://txmg.org/smith/coming-events/
