April 7, 2016 - April, recognized nationally as Child Abuse Prevention Month, brings an opportunity for us to recognize the role each and every one of us can play in preventing child abuse in our small town community. As members of Shelby County, we must take it upon ourselves to speak for those little ones who can not. One voice can save a life.
The first step in getting help for abused children, is being able to identify the symptoms of abuse. Knowing these symptoms can help an adult get help for a child in need. Remember, a single presence of a sign doesn't necessarily mean abuse is present. However, when multiple signs are being seen, and repeatedly being seen, there is a possibility of abuse.
There are four major types of child maltreatment and abuse. Each type has different symptoms, and children can exhibit symptoms of any of the four types at any given time. The four major types and their symptoms are listed below:
1. Neglect
- Signs of malnutrition
- Poor hygiene
- Unattended physical or medical problems
2. Physical Abuse
- Unexplained bruises, burns, or welts
- Child appears frightened of a parent or caregiver
3. Sexual Abuse
- Pain, bleeding, redness, or swelling in anal or genital area
- Age-inappropriate sexual play with toys, self, or others
- Age-inappropriate knowledge of sex
4. Emotional Abuse
- Extremes in behavior, ranging from overly aggressive to overly passive
- Delayed physical, emotional, or intellectual development
If you feel as if you have seen these symptoms in someone you know, I do encourage you to speak up. To report suspected abuse, you can contact the Children's Advocacy Center of Texas at 1-800-252-5400. Or you can simply contact your local Sheriff's Department. The Shelby County Sheriff's Department can be reached at 936-598-5600. Be a voice for someone who can't speak.
