Inspired by Possum Trot: A Tennessee Church on Mission in Shelby County

July 2, 2025 - When Heritage Baptist Church of Johnson City, Tennessee, first heard the powerful testimony of Bishop W.C. Martin and the story of Possum Trot, something deep stirred in their hearts. This God-centered, Great Commission church has always been known for its passion for service, but the Possum Trot story lit a fresh fire in their congregation.

Heritage Baptist is a thriving church body of about 415 members, and for over a decade, they’ve cultivated a strong foster and adoption ministry — reflecting God’s heart for vulnerable children and families. So when the opportunity came to serve the community that birthed the Possum Trot story, they knew they had to go.

In June 2025, they brought a mission team of 50 incredible people — including youth, young adults, and seasoned volunteers — to Shelby County, TX. Their goal? To be a blessing and an encouragement to the people of this special community. And that’s exactly what they’ve done.

Working across Shelby County — including the Pineywood Outreach Center, Bennett Chapel Church, the Possum Trot community, and the Center area — this energetic team has rolled up their sleeves and gotten to work. From fixing porches, ramps, and steps, to installing new flooring, painting homes, and tackling light plumbing issues, their work has brought comfort and dignity to families who needed a helping hand.

“They are a God-send to our community,” shared one local leader. “It’s not just about the repairs; it’s the love and kindness they bring with them.”

Heritage’s commitment to service is rooted in their love for Christ and their mission to care for “the least of these.” As Daniel Gipson from Heritage Baptist shared, “We are compelled to work with widows and orphans and hearing about Possum Trot was so encouraging, we wanted to bless and encourage the community of Possum Trot and help with needs in Shelby County, TX.”

Their presence has not gone unnoticed. Whether seen painting, sharing a meal, or praying with a neighbor, the Heritage Baptist mission team is leaving a lasting mark — not only on buildings but on hearts.

As you see these mission-hearted volunteers around town, be sure to share the warmth and hospitality that make Shelby County shine. Let them feel the joy and legacy of this community, just as they’ve brought theirs to us.

To God be the glory — for the story He wrote in Possum Trot, and for the hearts in Johnson City who answered the call to keep that legacy of love going.
