February 2015 - The FFA Show Team from Joaquin came home overjoyed following the most successful overall appearance at a “Major” livestock show this last week at the Fort Worth Stock Show. Saturday morning, Abi Hooper started the Jr. Breeding Heifer Show with her Shorthorn winning 1st place in her class. Soon after, Cralon Hughes placed 3rd in his class of Brangus heifers. Later that day, Justin Hooper’s Beefmaster won 2nd Place out of 19 November-born calves. Sunday afternoon, Addi Harvey’s Angus placed 4th in a competitive class of 22 Angus heifers.
Then, Trey Harvey’s Red Angus came in 2nd Place in class. (1st place calf in this class won Grand Champion Angus.) Late Sunday night, Lauren Neal’s Limousin won 1st Place in her class.
On Monday morning, Ethan Wood’s Simmental won Reserve Grand Champion in her Division. The Grand Champion advanced to win the Simmental show. Last in the Jr. Breeding Heifer show was Blake Cummings, who brought home a Division Reserve Grand Champion banner with a Simbrah heifer. To finish off Joaquin FFA’s participation in this stock show, Ethan Wood returned to Fort Worth this past Friday to exhibit in the steer show. His steer won 3rd Place in his class and made the sale.
We are very proud of the hard work and dedication that these FFA members have put in to their cattle projects while keeping up with their schoolwork, and we also appreciate Mr. Shane Vance for his many hours of guidance, instruction, and support. Without either, this success would not have been possible. Next week, they will travel to exhibit in the San Antonio Livestock Show.
