Center High School Library on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 –

Senior student athlete Makel Johnson signed an intent letter to study and play basketball at Tyler Junior College for the TJC Apache’s team. Johnson helped the Center Roughriders varsity boast a 23-10 record this season and the team went three rounds deep into the Texas UIL Basketball Playoffs.

Johnson is planning to major in Kinesiology in hopes of one day coaching. He looks forward to playing for veteran coach Mike Marquis who will be in his 22nd year with the college. TJC educates about 12,500 students annually.

CHS Athletic Director Coach Ricky Meeks led off the event and stated, “I’ve enjoyed having a small part in his journey I would like to recognized Coach Hiram Harrison and his family for their major contributions.”

Head Coach Hiram Harrison said, “He has put in a lot of work and this is a great accomplishment. We are proud, I know his family is proud and the community is too. We hope he goes on to do bigger and better things. Prayers will go out with you. Go out and make us proud!”

Makel himself then spoke and said, “I would like to thank those who helped me get to where I am today.”
