Lady Dragons Fall to Lady Tigers 54-50

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons varsity basketball team suffered a narrow 54-50 conference loss to the visiting West Sabine Lady Tigers. The loss drops the Lady Dragons season mark to 13-8 and they stand at 3-3 in District 24-2A play. West Sabine stands at 11-6, 4-2.

The game began with the Lady Tigers jumping out to a 11-2 lead by the mid-point of the first frame. They held a 11-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Dragons fought hard and they cut the WSHS lead to 18-14 points midway through the second period. SHS outpaced the visitors 10-6 during the remainder of the second stanza and the teams headed to the midway break tied at 24-24.

The game was still tied at the mid-point of the third quarter with each team having 32 points apiece. Shelbyville held a narrow 39-38 lead going into the final period. WSHS out-gunned the Lady Dragons 10-2 points in the first half of the fourth period and they led 48-41 with just four minutes remaining.

Shelbyville was able to out-score West Sabine 9-4 in the second half of the final frame but WSHS held on for the 54-50 district win.

Cori Lawson led the Lady Dragons with 16 points for the day. The Lady Dragons were led by London Weatherspoon with 14 points.

Shelbyville will travel to San Augustine’s Wolves Gymnasium on Friday, January 10 for more District 24 action which begins at 4:30 p.m. starting with JV play and then Varsity action to follow.
