Rams Shock Unbeaten Yellowjackets in Area Football Playoff

The Joaquin Rams varsity football team shocked the unbeaten Alto Yellowjackets by defeating them by a 25-21 score last Friday. The Rams now have a 10-2 season mark and move on to their next playoff matchup with Groveton High School at 7 p.m. next Friday, November 29, 2019, at Nacogdoches High School's Dragons Stadium. 

Senior Connor Bragg scored the first touchdown of the night in the first quarter and the Rams boosted their lead to 8-0 with a 2-point conversion. Alto scored later in the period on a 68-yard touchdown run by junior Vidareous High late in the first stanza to cut the JHS lead to 8-6.

Harmon West scored Alto’s second touchdown of the night with just 56 seconds left in the first half. AHS took a 14-8 advantage into the halftime intermission.

Joaquin got 3 points when Jesus Bravo booted a 32-yard field goal through the uprights with 3:40 left in the third quarter. This cut the Alto lead to just 14-11.

Alto extended their lead to 21-11 with 10:45 left in the fourth quarter when West scored on a goal line run.

Bragg scored his second touchdown on a 38-yard run with 9:49 remaining in the game to pull the Rams to within three points of Alto. The Rams trailed 21-18.

Loreno Lane plowed into the endzone from 3 yards out for the final score of the day with 5:24 remaining in the contest. The Rams defense was able to hold on the Ram’s 25-21 advantage for the remainder of the game.

Coach Wade Lawson and his staff will prepare the Rams for a tough Region III game against the Groveton Indians (10-2) on Friday. Groveton beat Big Sandy by a 39-32 score last week.

Alto’s season ended with their record at 12-1.
