September 30, 2025 - Red Ribbon Week, observed nationally from October 23 through 31, is the largest drug prevention campaign in the country. It began in 1985 to honor DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who lost his life while working to stop drug trafficking and protect communities. His story sparked a national movement focused on education, prevention, and the power of one positive choice.
At the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Council (ADAC), prevention is a year-round priority. But during October, the message reaches even further. ADAC’s Prevention Team and mascot, Leo the Drug-Free Lion, visit campuses across Deep East Texas to lead Red Ribbon rallies and hands-on activities. Students participate in dress-up days, pledge walls, crafts, and games that build confidence and encourage healthy choices. Leo’s presence adds excitement, making prevention messages both fun and memorable.
The Region 5 Prevention Resource Center at ADAC plays a critical role in strengthening these efforts. By gathering and sharing regional data, this team helps schools, coalitions, and communities understand local trends and apply targeted strategies. Their work ensures prevention efforts are not only effective but responsive to the unique needs of each county served.
The 2025 national theme, Life is a Puzzle, Solve It Drug Free, reminds us that every decision matters. Each healthy choice adds a piece to a future filled with opportunity, purpose, and connection. Parents, caregivers, and community members are encouraged to be part of that picture by wearing red ribbons, sharing prevention messages, and helping youth feel proud of living drug free.
