The Center Roughriders’ varsity baseball team advanced their District 20 4A mark to 2-4 with a 6-4 win over the visiting Huntington Red Devils. Centers overall mark has now moved to 6-11-1. They are now in a tie with the Hudson Hornets for the conference’s third spot trailing Carthage 6-0, and Jasper 4-1.

The Roughriders did the bulk of their damage in a rally in the bottom of the first inning which saw Jayden Hicks single and score on a passed ball behind the catcher. The ‘Riders eventually had five runs and two walks during the rally, highlighted by two runs-batted-in (RBI) double by Jake Hanson which gave Center a 4-0 lead. Center took a 5-0 lead later in the frame when Jase Bird drove Hanson in with an RBI single.

Huntington bounced back in the top of the second inning with a 2-out rally which saw them gain four consecutive single-base hits. This cut the Center lead to 5-1 after a score by Tyler Harris.

Huntington scored the game’s next score in the top of the sixth inning when Dylan Murphy reached on a walk and later scored on an error. Center led 5-2.

Center scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth when Colton Crawford singled to lead off the inning and was driven in later by a teammate’s single to rightfield.

Two errors and a walk during the bottom of the seventh inning allowed the Red Devils to score two runs on a Harris single to leftfield late in the contest.

Center will next travel to face Carthage at Bulldogs’ Stadium on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs (15-3-1) are 5-0 in District 20 action and are currently on a seven game win streak. They defeated Hudson 3-1 last Friday.
