Roughriders Earn 53-46 Regional Quarterfinal over Bears

The Center Roughriders won a hard-fought Texas UIL Region III Quarterfinal Basketball win over the Little Cypress Mauriceville Bears, by a 53-46 score on Tuesday. Center jumped out to an early 4-0 point lead and they led 6-4 midway through the first stanza. At the end of the first quarter CHS held a 10-7 advantage. The Bears fought back to tie the ‘Riders at 19-19 midway through the second frame but Center held a 27-24 lead at halftime. The Roughriders led by as much as 11 points during the third quarter but LCMHS fought back to cut Center’s lead to seven points by the end of the third period.

Near the end of the game the Bears were forced to foul to stop the clock. Each, MarMar Evans, Tim Johnson, Kedrin Hinson, and Cash Cross, were called on to sink clutch free throws for the ‘Riders to save the win during the later stages of the narrow 53-46 win.

Cash Cross was the only Center player in double figures this game. He scored 27 points. The Bears were led by Alan Winn with 13 points.

Center, 29-4, will move on to face the Houston Washington High School Eagles (26-7) at Bryan High School on Friday, March 3, 2023 at 8 p.m. Washington is the winner of District 21-4A and Center is the top seed in District 17. The Eagles won their quarterfinal over Yates High by a 96-84 score. Center is currently on an 8 game winning streak and Washington is now on a 18 game winning streak.
