Shelby County High School Football Begins on Friday

Pre-season practices and scrimmages are over for our local teams and Friday will mark the beginning of the 2019 football season.

The Center Roughriders will open up the regular football season with a trip to Tatum. The ‘Riders face the Eagles at Tatum’s Eagles Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 30, 2019.

The ‘Rider’s will be coached by new Head Football Coach Scott Ponder. Their District 9 4A contests will begin on October 11 when they host Tarkington. Other District 9 opponents are: Shepard, Huntington, and Jasper. Center went 6-5 last season and reached the bi-district level of the UIL Football Playoffs.

The Joaquin Rams are coached by Wade Lawson and will start the season next Friday when they host the Deweyville Pirates. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Rams Stadium.

Joaquin went 9-3 last season and reached the regional semifinal round of the UIL Football Playoffs. The Rams will begin District 11-2A competition on September 27 when they host the Garrison Bulldogs. Other District 11 opponents include Linden-Kildare, Timpson, Beckville, Tenaha, and Harleton.

The Shelbyville Dragons are coached by David Benbow. They were 5-6 and bi-district finalist last season.

The Dragons begin regular season play this Friday at 7:30 p.m. when they host the Beckville Bearcats at home. Shelbyville will start District 12 play on October 11 when they face Deweyville. Other conference foes will be West Sabine, Hull-Daisetta, Groveton, and San Augustine.

The Tenaha Tigers will open up their season next Friday at Troup. The Game will be at Troup High School at 7:30 p.m. Tenaha went 10-4 last season and lost in the Regional Finals to the San Augustine Wolves.

The Tigers are coached by first-year Head Coach Robert Tamplin. Tenaha will begin District 11 2A competition on September 27 at Timpson. Other District 11 opponents are Garrison, Joaquin, Beckville, Linden-Kildare, and Harleton.

The Timpson Bears are coached by Kerry Therwhanger. The Bears went 4-7 last season and reached the bi-district playoffs. They start the season facing the Hemphill Hornets at Hemphill next Friday at 7 :30 p.m. They start District 11 2A action on September 27 against Tenaha.
