Friday, January 10, 2020 at Joaquin Rams Gymnasium –
The Shelbyville Lady Dragons struggled early with the Joaquin Lady Rams. The two teams faced off in a District 22 2A game at Joaquin High School and the Lady Dragons led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Rams were able to outscore the Lady Dragons 19 -16 points during the second stanza and this tied things up at 29-29 at the midway intermission.
The third period would prove to be all Shelbyville and also the biggest difference in the game as SHS outscored Joaquin 15-1 and they took a 44-30 lead over the Lady Rams going into the final period of play.
Shelbyville outpaced Joaquin 19-17 in the final quarter on their way to a 63-47 win.
Riley Sherrod was the game’s high scorer with 24 points, Lady Rams teammate Kalie Brooks scored 11. The Dragons were led by Kiana Bennett with 23 points. Brooke Elliott added 18 points and Kioja Gates chipped in 14.
After taking a 10-point lead over Joaquin by the 2:40 mark of the first quarter, Shelbyville’s boy’s varsity went on to lead 21-10 by the end of the first quarter. By halftime the Dragons ballooned their lead to 42-19.
SHS outscored Joaquin 27-10 in the third stanza which allowed them to take a 67-29 lead into the final quarter. The Dragon would win this game by an 80-44 final score.
The Dragons were led by Jay Buckley with 22 points, Brayden Hand 14 and LD Coleman with 10 points. Lorenzo Lane scored 18 points for the Rams and teammate Drew Fuller had 12.
Shelbyville will host the Timpson Bears on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 with junior varsity action tipping off at 4 p.m. and varsity to follow.
Joaquin will travel to Garrison next Tuesday where jv will play at 4 p.m. and varsity follows.
