Shelbyville Dragons Win Region III Tournament Finals, Head to State

On Friday the Shelbyville Dragons took a 74-61 win over Crawford High School during the Region III-2A semifinals. The Dragons (36-3) continued on Saturday and beat the Grapeland Sandies by a 72-65 score to move on to the Texas State UIL Basketball Tournament next Thursday through Saturday at the San Antonio Alamodome.

Jay Buckley and Jordan Boykins each scored 24 points apiece in Friday’s game with the Crawford Pirates (25-7). The end of the first quarter saw Shelbyville holding a 17-13 advantage over the Pirates. By halftime SHS had pulled away slightly and grew their lead to 40-25.

By the end of the third period the Dragons led 62-37 on their way to cruising to the 74-61 win.

On Saturday the Dragons faced the Grapeland Sandies (34-2) who had beaten the Tenaha Tigers by an 83-67 score on Friday. Shelbyville downed Grapeland, 72-67, to advance to this week's Conference 2A state tournament. The Dragons (37-3) will square off with Gruver (25-3) at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2020. Martin's Mill and San Saba will play in the other semifinal at 8:30 a.m. The winners of these contest will face off in the championship matchup on Saturday.
