The Shelbyville Dragons varsity offense started slow in Thursday’s non-district game with Shepherd High School. The Dragon’s first two drives only netted them a total of five yards.

The Shepherd Pirates gained the first lead of the game when they capped a 9-play scoring drive, which covered 35 yards, with a 2-yard touchdown drive by Dezmon Yates with 9:09 minutes left in the second quarter. This score held up for the remainder of the first half of play.

The Dragons held the Pirates to just one first down in the opening drive of the third stanza. Shepherd punted the ball to Shelbyville where they took over with under 8 minutes left.

AJ Cartwright got the Shelbyville crowd on their feet with an electrifying touchdown run which covered the 96 yards needed for the Dragons first score of the game. The extra point kick failed and Shelbyville trailed only 6-7.

The final score of the contest came on another Cartwright scoring run with 10:04 minutes left in the contest. This time he went in from 4 yards out. Jaylon Brinson added a 2-point conversion which gave the Dragons a 14-7 margin in the winning effort.
