Shelbyville Dragons Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 –
West Sabine never trailed the hometown Shelbyville Dragons varsity basketball team on Tuesday as they pulled away for a lopsided 79-45 point District 24 2A conference win. The Dragons now stand at 15-3 for the season and they are atop the conference with a 4-0 win-loss mark. West Sabine is 4-9, 2-2.
Shelbyville jumped out to a 10-4 advantage midway through the first quarter and they led 23-12 going into the second frame. The Dragons held a 36-23 lead at the midway break.
A strong Dragons defensive press began to take its toll on the Tigers and SHS gained a 47-23 lead midway through the third stanza and they went into the final period leading 60-30. The dragons outscored the Tigers 19-15 in the final period to help gain the 79-45 point win.
Shelbyville was led by Geechie Mathis with 24 points. Dragon DJ Barnes had 17, Jon Mathis and Tanor Doggett each scored 14 points each. West Sabine was led by Damien Coleman with 15 and Tristan Wilson had 12 points.
Shelbyville will travel to San Augustine’s Wolves Gymnasium on Friday, January 10 for more District 24 action which begins at 4:30 p.m. starting with JV play and then Varsity action to follow.
