Shelbyville Takes District Win With 12-8 Run Win at Joaquin

The Shelbyville Dragons varsity baseball team remains in second place with a 3-1 District 23 2A mark after beating the Joaquin Rams by a 12-8 score. The Rams conference record now stands at 2-2 with 10 district games to play. Garrison leads the district with a 4-0 mark in the division.

The Dragons got on the scoreboard first when Dylan Robbins reached base on a Ram error. Ty Merriman next drove Robbins and himself in for scores with a 2-run homerun over the centerfield fence.

Shelbyville extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the second frame with scores from Justin Raymond and Tucker Clark.

Joaquin answered with a big rally in the bottom half of the second inning and Caleb Brooks, TJ Hawkins, Braylin Umbrell, Derek Holt, Jayden Carter and Maddox Hutchins scored to give Joaquin a 6-4 lead. Joaquin extended their lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning with runs by Hawkins and Umbrell.

The Dragons bounced back to cut the Rams lead by two runs at 8-6 with scores by Dragons Dylan Robbins and Ty Merriman. Shelbyville’s Justin Raymond was able to strike out the first three Rams batters he faced with strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth inning.

A SHS rally in the top of the seventh inning saw the Dragons utilize seven hits, two walks, and an error to score six runs and go up 12-8. The Dragons were then able to only give up a single free base in the bottom of the seventh inning and Raymond struck out the final two batters to close out the win.

The Rams and Dragons each will face District 23 opponents on Friday, March 25, 2022. Joaquin will travel to Garrison to face the Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. Shelbyville will travel to Mount Enterprise to face the Wildcats at 6 p.m.
