Shelbyville Takes Girl’s and Boy’s District Basketball Wins at Tenaha

The Shelbyville Dragons and Lady Dragons each won their District 22 2A varsity basketball games while visiting Tenaha on Friday. The Lady Dragons defeated the Lady Tigers by a 51-45 score. The Dragons overcame the Tigers in overtime by a 78-75 margin.

The Lady Tigers and Dragons battled hard in a close basketball game for most of the contest. Tenaha held a slim 6-5 point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Dragons were able to tie the game at 14-14 going into the locker room at the halftime intermission. Shelbyville led by as much as 11 points during the third stanza but Tenaha cut their lead to 32-24 by the buzzer at the end of the third quarter.

Eight points in the fourth quarter by Lady Dragon’s post Brooke Elliott gave SHS the advantage they needed to hang on and take the district win by a score of 51-45.

Leading scorers for Shelbyville were Brooke Elliott with 20 points, Jakaitlin Bolton and Kiana Bennett each had 13 points.

Tenaha leading scorers were Anali Giles with 12 points and Kamari Gray had 10.

Both Shelbyville and Tenaha are still in the hunt for playoff berths with 7 games remaining. The Lady Dragons are currently in third place with a 5-2 conference mark. Tenaha is in fourth with a 3-3 District 22 2A mark. Woden in undefeated and in sole possession of the first spot while Timpson is in second with a single loss.

The boy’s varsity matchup between Tenaha and Shelbyville was close throughout and the SHS Dragons ended up taking the 78-75 win in overtime. Tenaha led early and led 15-11 after the end of the first quarter. Shelbyville fought back and took a 34-29 lead in to the midway break.

Tenaha was able to cut the Shelbyville lead by just one point in the third stanza but they outpaced the Dragons 21-17 during the final period to send the contest into a 4-minute overtime period knotted at 66-66.

The Dragons outscored the Tigers 12-9 in the overtime frame and took the win by 3 points.

The Dragons were led by Jay Buckley with 39 points. LD Coleman and Kolby Parker each scored 13 points apiece. The Tigers were led by Mike Hogg with 30 points and Duece Garrett had 22.

The Dragons are atop the District 22 2A leaderboard with a 5-0 record. Tenaha stands at 3-1.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers will host Garrison on Friday, January 21, 2020 at the THS Special Events Center. Junior Varsity will start at 4:30 p.m. with varsity action to follow.

The Dragons and Lady Dragons will travel to San Augustine to face the Wolves on Friday, January 21, with JV starting at 4:30 p.m. Varsity action will follow.
