To the esteemed Council Members of the City of Timpson,
December 30, 2015 - Please accept my resignation as the Mayor of the City of Timpson effective December 31 , 2015. I have enjoyed serving as the mayor and feel that my presence on the council is creating an impasse with the current majority of the members.
I have returned my keys to Mrs. Leslie Leathers and have met with Austin Bank to have my access to City Banking terminated immediately. I have notified Cary Bovey, city attorney of my decision.
Moving forward, according to General Law Type A city procedures, the Council will need to accept my resignation, appoint a mayor to serve until the May election (the pro tem only serves in temporary absences), appoint a pro tem, take care of all resolutions of authority with both banks, and proceed with business of the City.
The position of Mayor and Mayor Pro-Tem will be appointed to serve through the May 7th election up until the meeting following the election when the election is canvassed. The empty seat created by the appointment to mayor will also need to be addressed. The Council may appoint someone to fill the vacancy or vote to leave it vacant.
Due to the short amount of time before an election it would not be prudent or financially responsible to call a special election.
I thank each one of you for your public service and wish you well in the upcoming year.
Thank you,
Debra Pate Smith
