Spanish Soldier Reenacts at Mission Dolores San Augustine

February 07, 2023 - A Naked and Unhappy Bearing – The Troopers of Los Adaes and Their Relationship with Mission Dolores

San Augustine, Texas – Mission Dolores will be hosting a free, family-friendly come-and-go program featuring historical reenactors portraying Spanish soldiers stationed at Mission Dolores in the 1760’s.

On Friday, February 10, from 10 am – 3 pm, we’ll gather around a campfire while Scott McMahon, Site Manager at Presidio La Bahia State Historic Site in Goliad and Jameson Moore, Educator/Interpreter at San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site in San Felipe talk to school groups (public, private and homeschoolers are welcome!) about what the life of Spanish soldiers would have been like and the difficulties they would have faced while trying to survive day-to- day in East Texas.

On Saturday, February 11, from 10 am – 3 pm, families, individuals and groups are encouraged to come by and interact with Scott and Jameson as they tell the story of the relationship between the mission, the presidio at Los Adaes, the native population and the French interlopers from the perspective of the presidial troopers.

Established in 1717 by Spanish settlers, Mission Dolores played an important role in shaping the Spanish experience with some of Texas’ earliest European immigrants. “The Spanish soldiers stationed at the East Texas missions and at Los Adaes were an important part of the “successful failure” of the missions and the first capital of Spanish Texas,” said Lisa Savage, Educator/Interpreter at Mission Dolores State Historic Site. “Because of the incredible hardships experienced by the soldiers, East Texas became a multi-cultural melting pot of Spanish, French and Native American culture and traditions that endure even to this day.”

All ages are welcome to attend this event, which will run from 10 am to 3 pm on both Friday and Saturday, February 10th and 11th. Admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and dress for the weather. No open containers. Please call 936-275-3815 or visit www.visitmissiondolores.com for more information.
