TAGHS to Hear Program by Bill O'Neal on "The Exploits of Audie Murphy on His Centennial"

March 11, 2025 - On Wednesday, March 19, at 2PM, in the Timpson Public Library annex, Bill O''Neal, former Texas State Historian and the author of dozens of books and papers, will entertain Timpson Area Genealogy and Heritage Society members and guests with "The Exploits of Audie Murphy on His Centennial."

Well known as a professor of history at Panola College for many years, Mr. O'Neal promises an action filled presentation, with a bit of soap opera included.

Audie Murphy, the son of a sharecropper, was born in Hunt County on June 20, 1925. He left school in the fifth grade to pick cotton to help support his family. His sister helped him manipulate documents so he could be inducted into the army, underage. Mr. Murphy became the most decorated soldier in WWII. After the war he starred in a movie about himself, "To Hell and Back"' and went on to have a career as an actor and singer until his death in 1971.

We welcome guests. This would be a great field trip for home schooled children.
