Tenaha Takes Pair of District 23 Varsity Basketball Wins at Joaquin

Each, the Tenaha Lady Tigers, and the Tigers varsity basketball teams took wins over Joaquin’s girl’s and boy’s squads at Joaquin High School on Friday.

The Lady Tigers and Rams game started slow offensively with THS holding a narrow 4-2 points lead midway through the first period. Tenaha gained the upper hand and led 12-2 at the end of the first quarter. A brutal defensive press allowed Tenaha to build a 20-2 lead midway through the second stanza and at halftime THS led 26-6. By the end of the third quarter the Lady Tigers had a 48-8 advantage on their way to eventually winning the game by a 61-16 final score. The win puts Tenahas’ overall season record at 26-5 and their District 23 2A standing at 8-0. Joaquin stands at 16-10 overall and 4-3 in District 23.

Tenaha was led by Kayanna Cox with 23 points, Kaedynce Cox with 14, and Christal Sparks with 10. Joaquin was led by Jessie Webb with 6 points.

The Tiger’s boy’s team never trailed Friday but Joaquin fought back several times to keep Tenaha’s lead below 10 points most of the night. Tenaha held a 9-2 point lead early but only a 11-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. THS led 18-13 midway through the second frame and they took a 29-24 lead into the locker room at the midway intermission. At the end of the third quarter THS led 47-42. By game’s end THS had secured a 72-62 road win.

Tenaha was led by Pooh Moore with 26 points, A’vante Fredieu with 17 and Kamerion Ross with 12. Joaquin was led by Tanner Doggett with 20 points, Conner Rios with 13 and Gauge Jordan with 11.

Tenaha will host the Gary Lady Bobcats and the Bobcats on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at Tenaha High School with JV action tipping off at 4:30 p.m. and varsity play following.

Joaquin will travel to Garrison Bulldogs Gymnasium on January 23 and JV teams will begin at 4:30 p.m. with varsity following.
