Texas Project Awards Given to Three in Lufkin District

Roy McClendon, Royce Oliver and Matthew Nethery accepted the Texas Project Awards Tuesday at the Associated General Contractors Luncheon in Austin. The awards are given yearly to outstanding TxDOT employees who overcome major construction obstacles on specific projects.

August 6, 2015 - At TxDOT, we believe our Best In Class state agency is home to the best and brightest project construction and design professionals in the nation. That was proven Tuesday when three Lufkin District employees were awarded 2014 Texas Project Awards.

The awards were presented at the Associated General Contractors’ Luncheon in the San Jacinto Ballroom at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin. Lufkin District Engineering Technicians Royce Oliver, Roy McClendon and Matthew Nethery were recognized for the accomplishments on three separate projects in Angelina, Shelby and Houston counties.

Although each project was different, Oliver, McClendon and Nethery worked with TxDOT contractors and staff relying on collaboration, creativity, and skill to achieve tremendous results on all three projects.

Oliver worked with Moore Brothers Construction, contractor for the $3.4 million project, on Spur 339 in Angelina County. Oliver encountered many issues as he worked on the urban project to convert an undivided four lane section to a divided five lane, flush median section with sidewalks and a new storm sewer system. The project and its challenges were handled with professionalism. Oliver retired in July after serving 11 years.

McClendon worked with AR Brothers Construction, contractor for the more than $818,000 contract, on BU 287 in Houston County. McClendon successfully met the project’s objective to install a new storm sewer system in the town of Grapeland. Community leaders petitioned for the project and it moved forward though there were many challenges, such as municipal utilities and existing gas lines. McClendon has been employed by TxDOT for more than seven years.

Nethery worked with Longview Road and Bridge, contractors for the $5.3 million project, on US 84 in Shelby County. The project was designed to rehabilitate the existing roadway and was initially delayed to avoid the removal of existing concrete pavement during the winter months. Preservation of the subgrade was a priority and the pavement was successfully rebuilt. Nethery took special care to work with the small community’s businesses and school so as not to hinder the movement of traffic. Nethery has been employed by TxDOT for more than 18 years.

The Texas Project Award Program was initiated by Raymond E. Stotzer, Jr. in 1987 and was developed to recognize TxDOT and contractor personnel who have overcome major construction problems in a non-disruptive manner. The program also recognizes individuals who are responsible for the plans, specifications and estimates of projects that resulted in no or only minor construction problems.

The Lufkin District congratulates all of the award winners and appreciates the recognition of their dedication and commitment to excellence.
