Garrison High School on Friday, February 21, 2025 –
The Tenaha Tigers varsity basketball team led Friday’s Area Round Elimination game over the Douglass Indians by as much as 12 points but they could never truly pull away in the later stages.
The first quarter saw the two teams tied at 5-5 points midway through and Douglass held a narrow 13-10 lead at the end of the opening frame. Tenaha held a slim 17-15 lead midway through the second stanza and they pulled away to lead by ten points at 27-17 by the midway break.
Douglass chipped away at the THS lead during the third frame and the Tigers led by eight points at 32-24 midway through the third quarter and they held a 6-point lead at 40-34 at the end of the third quarter.
By the mid-point of the final period the game was tied at 42-42. Six points by Ja’Torion Moore, and a fierce defensive press in the later stages of the game, helped Tenaha outpace the Indians in the last four minutes and earn the 49-43 win.
The win gives the Tigers a 27-8 season record and advances them to the Regional Semifinal round of the 2024-25 Texas UIL State Playoffs where they will face the Grapeland Sandies next Tuesday, February 25 at Nacogdoches High School at 7 p.m.
Avanta Fredieu led the Tigers with 11 points. Ja’Torion Moore and Brikelian Kenney each scored ten points. The Indians were led by Cason Bendy with 13 points and Jackson Rice scored 11.
