THS Student Selected for 2016 Government-in-Action Youth Tour
Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative is proud to be sponsoring two area high school students on the Government-in-Action Youth Tour to Washington, DC on June 8th – June 17th.
The tour provides the students with an opportunity to visit the Capitol, historical sites and museums. They also will have an opportunity to meet with their congressional representative. Delegates selected are Cutter Smith of Timpson High School and Allison Day of Burkeville High School.
Senator Lyndon Johnson inspired the Youth Tour when he addressed the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Annual Meeting in Chicago in 1957. He declared, “If one thing goes out of this meeting, it will be sending youngsters to the national capital where they can actually see what the flag stands for and represents.” Consequently, some Texas electric cooperatives sent groups of young people to Washington, DC to work during the summer in Senator Johnson’s office.
In 1958, an electric cooperative in Iowa sponsored the first group of 34 young people on a week-long study tour of the nation’s capital. Later that same year, another bus load came from Illinois. The idea grew and other states sent bus loads of young people throughout the summer, By 1959, the “Youth Tour” had grown to 130 delegates. In 1964, NRECA began to coordinate joint activities among the state delegations and suggested that co-op representatives from each state arrange to be in Washington, D.C., during Youth Tour week. The first year of the coordinated tour included approximately 400 young people from 12 states. Word of the program has continued to spread and today more than 1,500 young people and their chaperones from 45 states participate in the Youth Tour every year.
In 2014, Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative sent its first delegates on the Youth Tour. To be considered, applications were accepted at Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative from high schools in its eight county service area. Applicants must be a current sophomore or junior whose parent or guardian actively receive electricity from Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative.
Vocational Ag Teachers Present at Conference
Mr. Ty Cauthen and Mrs. Kristin Powers will be presenting workshops at the Vocational Agricultural Teachers Association of Texas Professional Development Conference July 25-29 in Corpus Christi, TX. Their workshop will give insight and educational opportunities to fellow Agricultural Science teachers across Texas about the “The Road Map To Student Success”. Both Powers and Cauthen will present information to their peers about career readiness through proper documentation, scholarship readiness, FFA, SAE, and proper preparation.
