Timpson Wins 25-22 Over Joaquin, Gains District 11 Lead

The Timpson Bears varsity football team maintained an unblemished season record with a narrow 25-22 come from behind win over the Joaquin Rams. The Bears now hold an 8-0 season mark and a 4-0 District 11 2A-1 standing. The Rams are at 6-2, 3-1.

Joaquin capped a 60-yard scoring drive when senior running back Andre Brown bolted into the endzone from 11 yards out to help JHS take a 7-0 lead with 7:35 left in the first quarter.

Joaquin held Timpson to just four plays on their first drive as the Bears were forced to punt the ball back to the Rams with four minutes left in the first frame.

With 6:46 left in the second quarter, Joaquin capped an 84-yard drive with a 16-yard Malik Stotts touchdown run that helped JHS take a 14-0 lead over the Bears.

Timpson answered back with a 64-yard scoring drive which was capped by a 56-yard touchdown by junior quarterback Terry Bussey. Sophomore Geo Bryant added an extra point kick and Timpson trailed 14-7 with 4:11 left in the first half.

At the beginning of the third period, Timpson had a 70-yard reception called back but later scored on a 44-yard Bryant reception for a touchdown with 8:57 remaining in the period. Joaquin blocked the extra point kick attempt. The Rams held a narrow 14-13 advantage.

Timpson shut down Joaquin’s next offensive drive on 3-downs and a punt. The Bears drove the ball 40 yards and scored when Bussey ran in on a 1-yard touchdown run with 3:15 left in the third stanza. THS led 19-14. This was Timpson’s first lead of the contest.

Bussey again scored near the beginning of the fourth quarter and Timpson led 25-14 after the Bears extra point attempt failed.

Bussey intercepted a JHS pass with 9:36 left in the game to help the Bears take precious time off the remaining game clock. Joaquin was able to make a defensive stand and force the Bears to punt the ball back to Joaquin with 3:36 left in the game. Joaquin moved the ball 47-yards and scored when junior Gauge Jordan took a keeper run into the endzone from 3 yards out. Junior Jericho Newman ran a 2-point conversion run in to cut Timpson’s lead to 25-22 with just 39 seconds left to play.

An onside kick by the Rams was recovered by the Bears and they were able to expire the remaining time on the playclock for the win.

Timpson will host the Shelbyville Dragons next Thursday, October 27, 2022 at John Herbert Eakin Stadium at 7 p.m. The Dragons took a 59-46 home win over the winless San Augustine Wolves on Friday. The Dragons are 2-2 in District 11 games.

Joaquin will travel to West Sabine next Thursday, October 27 at 7 p.m. at Tigers Stadium. WSHS had a bye last Friday. They are 2-2 in District 11 action.
