October 4, 2024 - A traffic switch is planned on US 59/SL 224 in a major construction project as it enters the next phase of construction.
Motorists traveling near the US 59 South realignment construction project in Nacogdoches will experience detours beginning Monday, October 7, 2024 that will last up to five days. SL 224 Westbound traffic will be diverted to the US 59 exit through the signal, and traffic will not be allowed to cross the US 59 overpass. This detour is necessary for placement of concrete traffic barriers and striping on SL 224 and at the SL 224 entrance ramp. South and Eastbound SL 224 traffic will cross the median on detour pavement to the northbound side and then back to the southbound exit onto US 59 South. The north intersection of Old Lufkin Road at SL 224 will be closed to all traffic during this phase of construction.
“As this construction enters its next phase, these detours are necessary at these locations so work can be done that will move traffic toward a final configuration,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer. “This is a very busy area, and we urge motorists to reduce speed and stay alert for workers and moving equipment.”
The project includes new US 59 main lanes that will directly connect to SL 224 just south of SH 7 and is being built to interstate standards. The project also includes the construction of overpasses at Spradley Street, existing US 59 and Old Lufkin Road, and the construction of frontage roads for SL 224 between SH 7 and BU 59.
Longview Bridge and Road is serving as contractor for the $86.9 million project that is scheduled to be completed in Fall 2026. Message boards have been placed announcing the upcoming traffic switch. Motorists should obey all traffic control as this work is done. Stay alert, reduce speed, and expect delays near these detours.
