April 14, 2019 - On Friday, April 12, 2019, Nacogdoches United Way, which also serves Shelby and San Augustine Counties, presented four non-profit organizations with funds to impact local issues of concern. Organizations receiving $1,500 each in funding were as follows:
• Fannie Booth Brown Memorial Library in support of the tween summer reading program,
• Center Independent School District Meal Recovery program to purchase food containers for Meals on Wheels food program,
• Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Health and Fitness Fair committee to provide additional screenings at the 2020 Health and Fitness Fair, and the
• Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service - Shelby County Family and Community Health committee to provide food and supplies for the 4-H Food and Nutrition project.
The goal of the Nacogdoches United Way is to support lasting change with measureable improvements for people in need within Shelby County. Focusing efforts on the building blocks of a better life – quality, education, good health, and financial stability – United Way connects the experience, expertise, and resources to advance the common good and well-being of the community. Areas of impact to be addressed by United Way include education through early and middle grading reading programs, financial stability through workforce development, and health through healthy food choices, youth obesity prevention and access to drug and alcohol prevention training and counseling.
