VFW Post 8904 Traveling for VJ Day Program with WWII Veteran Procell (Cancelled)

A.J. Procell at 2017 VJ Day ProgramAugust 30, 2022 - Unfortunately, the VJ Day program planned at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Bossier City is cancelled. Thank you to all those who were planning to attend and honor the eight World War II Veterans that reside at the veterans home. Special thanks to the home itself along with VFW Posts 4588 and 5951 in Bossier City.

August 29, 2022 - The VJ Day (Victory over Japan) program presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and the Auxiliary has an unusual twist this year. It will be conducted at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Bossier City, Louisiana where post member and World War II Veteran A. J. Procell now resides.

Mr. Procell was a 21-year-old member of the US Navy from Shelby County, Texas when the Japanese formally surrendered aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. While we have read and possibly saw a movie or documentary of the event, Mr. Procell actually lived it. He was there, anchored in Tokyo Bay aboard the USS North Carolina on that historic day.

He is now 98 years old and a member of the “Greatest Generation” that is quickly fading from the landscape. We thought it only appropriate that we honor him and the seven other WWII Veterans that reside there. The program will begin at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 2, 2022 at the home located at 3130 Arthur Ray Teague Parkway, Bossier City. The program is open to the public so please feel free to attend yourself and say hello to this well-known Shelby County personality. KTBS TV, Channel 3 in Shreveport will also be covering the event.
