"Books and Bible" by Jerry Hopkins

April 30, 2025 - There are many books in the world that I love. I own many books that are dear to my heart. They have stirred me in some way; they have moved me spiritually or intellectually. I began as a child reading books. My teachers encouraged me to read. They enriched my intellectual life by insisting that I read certain books — history books, novels, biographies and other kinds of books. I was taught to take care of library books and thereby my own personal books. I came to love and use books very early in my life.

“God Here” by Dr. Jerry Hopkins

March 20, 2025 - There is a passage about God’s presence and God’s work that we need at this critical time in our experience. In the Old Testament book of Zephaniah God says that He is present with His people (3:14-20). Then He promises to do some specific things for His people. He comes to His people. Zephaniah emphasizes that as God’s people we ought to be praising, singing, worshipping and rejoicing with gladness. “You shall see disaster no more” (3:15). This is what happens when God is in our midst. This is revival, God working in, through and for His people.

Commentary on "Achieving Success" by Dr. Jerry Hopkins

January 23, 2025 - Success is something that most people are interested in achieving and maintaining. Nobody likes or wants to fail. So what can be said about school and success? There are some very important things that we need to stress in education and helping students succeed. Businesses and business leaders want to succeed. I don’t know of anyone who sets out to intentionally fail. I sometimes suspicion politicians who want to guarantee failure on the part of some programs. I have known some teachers who got it in their head that some students should not succeed or even pass.

"Church and Preaching" by Jerry Hopkins

October 10, 2024 - Church is not a popular place for many today.  Many churches are declining; some are actually dying and closing their doors.  Some churches have even combined.  Along with the decline of church has come the decline in preaching and teaching the Bible.  I think it is important for us to consider both church and the vital role of preaching, the centrality of the sermon in the worship experience.

"A Gideon Story" by Jerry Hopkins

October 2, 2024 - The story of Gideon is found in the Old Testament book of Judges (chapters 6-8). Gideon became Israel’s hero, saving his people from the Midianites. Gideon and a small group of 300 faithful followers, each carrying a trumpet and a jar with a burning torch inside, surrounded the Midianites army one night. Gideon signaled his followers to smash their jars, blow their trumpets and shout. The Midianites fled in terror as the Israelites attacked killing them all.
