VFW Loyalty Day Observance May 1

April 30, 2024 - Loyalty Day originally began as "Americanization Day" in 1921 as a counter to the Communists’ May 1st celebration of the Russian Revolution. On May 1st, 1930, 10,000 VFW members staged a rally at New York’s Union Square to promote patriotism. May 1st then evolved into Loyalty Day and the first official observance of the day was in 1959 after the signing of Public Law 85-529 on July 18, 1958.

Flags at Half Staff Alert

October 3, 2023 - Flags are now flying at half staff per Presidential Proclamation for Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Her funeral will be Thursday, October 5, 2023 and flags should be raised at sunset that day.

September 30, 2023 - Presidential Proclamation issued September 29, 2023 asks that all flags be lowered to half-staff in honor of Senator Dianne Feinstein until sunset on the day of interment (to be announced).

July 26, 2022 - On June 25, 1950, the North Korean Army began an offensive to invade South Korea that resulted in the capture of the republic’s capital, Seoul, within four days. The United States, the United Kingdom and other members of the United Nations moved to actively defend South Korea – an effort that would last until July 27, 1953, when negotiations concluded and fighting finally ended.

Flags at Half Staff in Honor of Victims of Attack in Kabul, Afghanistan

August 27, 2021 - Today, in accordance with the President's proclamation, all flags on public buildings and grounds should be be lowered to half-staff in remembrance and as a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless act of violence perpetrated on August 26, 2021, in Kabul, Afghanistan, and remain at half-staff until sunset, Monday, August 30, 2021.
