Across the Preacher’s Desk: Broadminded or Narrow-minded?

September 22, 2022 - Believe it or not, there have been times I have been accused of being too “narrow-minded” when it comes to spiritual matters. Yet, Jesus said in Matthew 7:14, “Strait is the gate and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life and few there be that find it.” There are actually other areas of life where you find narrow-mindedness.

There is no room for being broadminded in the chemical laboratory. Water is composed of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. The slightest deviation from this formula means you don’t have water.

Across the Preacher’s Desk: Living For Jesus

August 25, 2022 - Every morning, the sun comes rising over the eastern hills to flood this old world with its light. There are myriads of folks who greet each new day with an eager freshness. To them, every day is full of hope and promise. Their hearts are light, their problems are nothing more than challenges to a more exhilarating life. Yet, there are others who face each new day with a certain amount of dread and foreboding. They are convinced that the problems they face are not just challenges, they are a weight to carry beyond their strength.

Across The Preacher’s Desk: What Can I Do?

August 5, 2022 - Quite often, we don't feel like the church is what it ought to be. We just feel like the church doesn't quite measure up to its potential. In his inaugural address, January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy made the now famous statement, "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." Warren G Harding said something similar at the Republican National Convention in Chicago in 1916. He said, "we must have a citizenship less concerned about what the government can do for it and more anxious about what it can do for the nation."

Across The Preacher's Desk: Don't Look Back

July 29, 2022 - Satchel Paige was a professional baseball player noted both for his longevity and his numerous witticisms that are often quoted. One of those was, dont look back, something may be gaining on you. You know, that is pretty sound advice, something that the Bible also calls for.

Looking back hinders forward progress, it can cause us to be depressed and it may be bringing defeat into our lives.
