Texans to Celebrate Arbor Day 2016 in the State’s Oldest Town

August 24, 2016 - Congratulations to the City of Nacogdoches, Texas for being selected as the Texas Arbor Day 2016 host city. Noting their rich history in forestry and designation as a Tree City USA, Texas A&M Forest Service, the Texas Forestry Association and the Texas Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture selected the City of Nacogdoches.

Paul Johnson, Crusader: Changing How We Talk About Trees

August 17, 2016 - Texas A&M Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program Coordinator Paul Johnson has discovered that it is not enough for communities to sustainably manage and care for the urban forest. In order to make a lasting difference, individual people have to get engaged, educated and enthused about trees. And Johnson has made it his life’s work to spread the word.

New App Allows People to View Tree Census with Ease

July 6, 2016 - For the first time ever, a census for trees is available in a new, easy-to-use application developed by Texas A&M Forest Service.

The Urban Forest Inventory and Analysis of trees in Austin, Texas, is presented graphically in My City’s Trees.

My City’s Trees enables civic leaders, community planners, elected officials and anyone with access to the Internet, to learn about Austin’s urban forest, and explore Urban FIA data by land cover, city growth, watersheds and eco-regions.

Texas A&M Forest Service Urges Caution During July 4th

June 29, 2016 — COLLEGE STATION, Texas — As Texans from around the state make plans of picnics with family and friends, parades through town squares and fireworks displays after dark, Texas A&M Forest Service urges caution with outdoor activities such as grilling, campfires and fireworks.

“According to the National Fire Protection Association, July 4th has the most fires reported than on any other day and fireworks account for two out of five of those fires — more than any other cause of fire,” TFS Mitigation and Prevention Department Head Bruce Woods said.

Texas A&M Forest Service Supports Soil, Water Stewardship Week

April 23, 2016 — COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M Forest Service partners with the Association of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Texas Wildlife Association, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, and Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board to highlight the importance of voluntary land stewardship in Texas during the annual Soil and Water Stewardship Week, April 24–May 1.

“Land Stewardship Produces a Healthy Texas,” is the theme of this year’s statewide campaign.

Funds Available for Forest Thinning Through Southern Pine Beetle Prevention Program

April 19, 2016 - Texas A&M Forest Service is accepting applications for the 2016 Southern Pine Beetle Prevention Program. Through this cost-share program eligible forest landowners can receive financial and technical assistance related to reducing the threat of future SPB infestations and outbreaks.
 
Funds provided by USDA Forest Service-Region 8 and Forest Health Protection can assist landowners with conducting first thin operations in overly dense, pulpwood size pine stands in 23 East Texas counties.
 

Panhandle to Expect Escalated Fire Weather Conditions

March 22, 2016 — LUBBOCK, Texas — Escalated fire weather conditions will be present over the Texas Plains region Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued an alert putting parts of the Panhandle in the “extremely critical” and “elevated” categories for wildfire potential.

The areas of concern are Amarillo, Childress, Lubbock, Abilene and Midland/Odessa.

March 8, 2016 — COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Want to learn how your community can manage a wildfire incident? The newest learning tool in wildland fire and all-hazard management is set to be showcased at Lone Star College-Montgomery in the Woodlands.

Simtable uses geographic data and a variety of colorful and interactive features to project customized landscapes onto a giant sandbox, creating realistic scenario training based on terrain, weather and existing infrastructure.
