March 13, 2020 - The intersection of Loop 500 and FM 699 was the scene of a major crash incident incident Thursday, March 13, 2020.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper Jonathan Stinson, at 2:20pm a white 2019 White Tuscon Hyundai driven by Conelious Greer, 56, of Dallas was northbound on FM 699 when he disregarded a stop sign at the intersection of Loop 500. The Hyundai then struck the left side of a white 2019 Nissan Frontier driven by Rebecca Rene Rogers, 27, of Center sending both vehicles traveling off Loop 500 and onto the west side where the Hyundai rolled onto its driver's side.

Greer and an 8-year-old, 7-year-old twins, and a one-year-old were all transported by ambulance to Nacogdoches Medical Center - Shelby Emergency Department. Only Greer and one of the children were taken for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries.

Greer was issued a citation for disregard stop sign.

Emergency personnel with the Center Fire Department, Shelby County Sheriff's Department, and the Center Police Department all responded to assist at the scene.

Trooper Stinson was assisted at the scene by Troopers Buster, Jones and Fountain.

To Shelby County Residents:

March 12, 2020 - As the Emergency Management Director for Shelby County, I am working closely with the County Emergency Management Coordinator, Kerri Shofner.  We are monitoring all available information from the State of Texas Department of Emergency Management, Department of State Health Services, and Governor’s Office.  We are also monitoring information from the US Government, including an update via a phone conference on Wednesday by the White House and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.

At this time, the best information we can offer is from the Texas Department of State Health Services:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow the CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask:
  • The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID19.
  • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).

For more detailed information on coronavirus (COVID-19) please visit the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention website at www.cdc.gov or the Texas Department of State Health Services at www.dshs.texas.gov.

We assure you that we are monitoring the situation and will inform the public of any information that we receive.

Pine Grove does NOT have the coronavirus! and we DO NOT want it!!

March 11, 2020 - Too often the public is not prepared for new diseases and illnesses because they are not proactive to prevent the spread of infections. We at Pine Grove are however being very proactive to safeguard our residents whom we love and cherish.

We have limited access to the facility to the front door only and require all visitors fill out a questionnaire to verify limited exposure and the absence of symptoms. Upon approaching the front door, you will see signs cautioning visitors to refrain from visiting if they are symptomatic or to call the facility if they have questions.

We normally encourage visitors and welcome family members to the facility, however, with a reported case of the coronavirus (COVID 19) as close as Longview, we are temporarily discouraging unnecessary visits to the facility in attempt to be proactive for our resident’s health and safety. While the complete effects of the coronavirus are not yet known, we believe this illness may not affect an otherwise healthy person the same as it may affect someone with a compromised immune system that requires them to reside in a nursing facility. This is the reason an otherwise healthy person could transmit this disease without even knowing they have it.

We are so thankful for all the support and understanding of our families, visitors and community during this time.

As a very wise nurse reminds us, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Thanks!

Justin Eastepp, LNFA
Pine Grove Nursing Center Administrator

March 11, 2020 - The Shelby County Commissioner’s appointed Taylor Fanguy to the position of Shelby County Constable Precinct 4 during their meeting held March 11, 2020.

The position has had a rocky start this year with three resignations in around three months. Most recently, Sean Smith’s resignation was accepted during the March 4, 2020 meeting citing personal reasons.

The commissioners went into executive on March 11 with County Attorney - Gary Rholes, Treasurer - Ann Blackwell, Taylor Fanguy, Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 - Jackie Kirkwood, and Constable 1 - Zach Warr. When they returned to open session, a motion carried to appoint Taylor Fanguy as Constable for Precinct 4. Allison Harbison, Shelby County Judge, then administered the oath of office to Fanguy.

The meeting was then adjourned.

According to Fanguy, he has been a deputy with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department for the past two years.
