Update 12:00pm: Power has been restored and the roadway is completely opened.

May 4, 2016 - The power is out at the Shelby County Today office temporarily while AEP Swepco linemen repair a power pole which was tagged not long ago for needing replacement. The outage will take several hours; however, thanks to the newly redesigned Shelby County Today website, we are still able to post news, around town stories, classifieds, and more.

Be careful traveling through San Augustine street as work crews have cones out which narrows the roadway.

May 3, 2016 - (Update): As of 8:32pm, emergency personnel have cleared the scene and power has been restored.

May 3, 2016 - Bear Drive in Timpson was shut down due to a crash which left many without power in Timpson Tuesday afternoon.

According to Timpson Police Officer Jake Metcalf, on May 3, 2016 at 1:20pm Jeremy Don Hammers, 39, of Timpson was traveling southwest on Bear Drive in a dump truck owned by Lone Star Locations Services LLC. of Center. For an unknown reason, Hammers exited to the right of the roadway at Marcus Street and collided with a utility pole, multiple water meters and three telephone distribution pedestals. The dump truck continued on the sidewalk of Bear Drive until Todd Street where it left the roadway completely and struck a tree.

Several meter loops were ripped from homes as the dump truck traveled on Bear Drive.

Timpson Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD), Timpson Volunteer Ambulance Service (TVAS), Timpson Police Department (TPD), City of Timpson, Northeast Texas Power, AT&T and Hopkins Wrecker Service all responded to the scene. Hammers refused treatment from Timpson Volunteer Ambulance Service and no injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

Hammers was cited for failure to maintain a single lane.

TVFD, TPD, and utility crews remained at the scene as they worked to restore power and any other utilities effected by the incident.

May 2, 2016 - U.S. Highway 96 North just outside of Center was the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Monday, April 25, 2016.

Center Police Officers and the Center Fire Department were originally called out to the scene of the crash as the northbound roadway was blocked. When the officers arrived, they began checking on those involved in the incident and when the firemen arrived they began to direct traffic around the crash scene.

The Texas Department of Public Safety was dispatched to the scene of the crash and when Trooper Sean Smith arrived he began his investigation. According to Trooper Smith, at around 8pm a black GMC Yukon driven by Lino Reyes, of Center, exited from a private driveway next to the Cajun Corner and across from Carpet One Floor and Home.

As Reyes entered the northbound traffic lanes, a black Volkswagen Jetta driven by Lindsey Bonner, of Gary, struck the left-rear quarter panel of the Yukon causing damage to the Yukon and Major damage to the Jetta. The Yukon came to rest in the middle of the roadway facing east and the Jetta came to rest facing north with the rear of the vehicle in the Cajun Corner parking lot and the remainder partly in the roadway.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene and no injuries were reported resulting from the crash. Reyes was issued a citation for fail to yield right of way and no driver's license.

Trooper Smith was assisted at the scene by Center Police Sgt. Scott Burkhalter, Officer Bobby Walker and Officer Andrew Williams.
