January 9, 2024 - State Highway 87 North near the intersection of FM 1645 was the scene of a fatal crash on January 9, 2024.
Timpson Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD) and Timpson Ambulance Service were dispatched to the crash scene to aid those involved.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the preliminary crash investigation indicates that at approximately 1:50am, a 2003 GMC Yukon driven by Joshua Pack, 32, of Garrison was traveling north. It is reported that the vehicle left the road to the right and struck a tree.
Pack was transported to LSU Shreveport for treatment of life-threatening injuries. His passenger, Zebulaun Keys, 37, was pronounced deceased on scene by Tracy Broadway, Justice of the Peace for Precinct 5.

January 9, 2024 - State Highway 7 East outside of Center was the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Saturday, January 6, 2024.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene of the crash just under 3/4 of a mile from SL 500 at around 11:54am where the Center Fire Department and Shelbyville Volunteer Fire Department were in the middle of a house fire training. The fire personnel were able to break away from their training and immediately assist those involved.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper Keith Jones, a silver 2015 Chevrolet Cruz driven by Samantha Ann Gordon, 47, of Center was eastbound on State Highway 7 East on the shoulder when Gordon made a u-turn to go back west. In doing so, the Chevrolet crossed the center line after completing the u-turn and into eastbound traffic. The Chevrolet then struck a red 2004 Pontiac Aztek driven by Elizabeth Miller Bridges, 73, of Joaquin which was traveling eastbound.
The Pontiac came to rest partially in the east and westbound traffic lanes, facing south, and the Chevrolet came to rest in the westbound traffic lane, also facing south.

Gordon and her passenger Stacy Oates, 49, were transported to Nacogdoches Medical - Shelby Emergency Department for medical evaluation.
Bridges refused treatment by EMS at the scene.

Gordon was issued citations for wrong side of roadway not passing and no driver’s license.
Traffic was backed up until the vehicles could be removed from the roadway. Hughes Wrecker Service towed both vehicles from the location.
Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies assisted at the incident location.
January 8, 2024 - At 12:30pm on Monday, January 8, 2024 the National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 1pm for Southwestern De Soto Parish in northwestern Louisiana; Northwestern Sabine Parish in northwestern Louisiana; Eastern Shelby County in eastern Texas; Northeastern San Augustine County in eastern Texas; and Northwestern Sabine County in eastern Texas.
At 12:30pm, a severe thunderstorm was located near Patroon, or 19 miles southeast of Center, moving northeast at 55 mph.
Radar indicated, hazardous weather of quarter size hail with an impact of damage to vehicles is expected.
Locations impacted include Milam, San Augustine, Zwolle, Converse, Rosevine, Patroon, Oak Grove, Pleasant Hill, Huxley, South Mansfield, Noble, Stanley, Hurstown, Sexton, Pelican, Toledo Bend Reservoir North, and Jordans Store.

January 8, 2024 - During the first week of January 2024, the Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department had 2 calls. Here’s a summary of the week’s events.
Wednesday night at 10:26pm a call was received for a saltwater truck that was stuck in the ditch on Highway 7 East. The driver of the truck had attempted a sharp turn to the right and the back wheels of his trailer ran into a steep ditch, preventing him from completing the turn. It took the use of two heavy duty tow trucks to get the saltwater truck back onto a flat surface. One tow truck held the loaded trailer upright and the other pulled the truck backwards out of the ditch and onto the highway. The JVFD provided traffic control on the roadway while the tow truck company was conducting the recovery operation.
Friday morning at 10:36am a call came in for a female having chest pains at the Joaquin Apartments. The JVFD medical team was advised of the situation as well as Allegiance EMS to get the patient the help she needed.

January 7, 2024 - The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed the arrest of four individuals following a warrant service in Tenaha on Thursday, January 4, 2024.
According to Lt. Chad Hooper, law enforcement officials served the warrants on a Houston Street residence in Tenaha and those arrested include Jason George, 26, of Garrison; Kelsey Frazier, 35, of Timpson; Douglas Hooper, 66, of Tenaha; Deborah Jacobs, 58, of Tenaha

Recovered were a variety of narcotics including methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana of unspecified quantities.
According to the Shelby County Jail booking information, Douglas Hooper was charged with manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance, felony 1; Possession of marijuana, misdemeanor b; and possession of a dangerous drug, misdemeanor a; Deborah Jacobs was charged with manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance, felony 1; Possession of marijuana, misdemeanor b; and possession of a dangerous drug, misdemeanor a; Kelsey Frazier was charged with possession of a controlled substance PG1 1G<4G, felony 3; and Jason George was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor c; and possession of item/drug in a correctional facility.

January 7, 2024 - Customers need to be home for technicians to restore service. Customers need to call 888-551-4011 only if there is a blue door hanger at their home or business
Following a natural gas outage affecting approximately 1,500 customers in Center and Shelbyville, Texas, CenterPoint Energy has restored service to all customers who have provided the company access to perform safety checks and relight pilots. The outage was a result of damage to a third-party pipeline that is not owned or operated by CenterPoint Energy.
A small number of customers still remain without service because CenterPoint Energy employees were not able to access their home or business. The relighting process requires CenterPoint Energy employees to have access to each location to light pilots and check to make sure it is safe to resume service. If an adult over age 18 is not at the service address when a technician arrives, the company will leave a blue door hanger with instructions.
“A customer needs to call us only if there is a blue door hanger at their home or business indicating that we have already been there to attempt to restore service,” said John Seale, Operations Director at CenterPoint Energy. “Please call 888-551-4011, the number on the door tag left by our service personnel.
“We greatly appreciate our customers’ cooperation and patience as our employees worked as quickly as we could to safely restore natural gas service,” said Seale.

“Once the third-party pipeline company made the necessary repairs, CenterPoint Energy technicians were able to complete the process of turning off each customer’s natural gas meter. This was followed by a series of additional safety checks to verify that natural gas service can be restored safely,” said John Seale, Operations Director at CenterPoint Energy. “As we work to restore service to impacted customers, safety continues to be our number-one priority.
“Qualified service technicians will come to your home and/or business today to turn on your natural gas meters. We expect to restore service today to all customers who provide us access to perform safety checks and relight pilots. Our technicians will work until 10 p.m. tonight.

“If our technicians are not able to access your home or business today, the relighting process will resume tomorrow at 7 a.m. We appreciate your patience as we work to restore service to your communities,” added Seale.

At this time, no action is required on the part of the customer. An adult over age 18 needs to be at the service address when a technician arrives, if an adult is not present, the company will leave a door hanger with instructions. All CenterPoint Energy technicians and contractors wear identification badges and will gladly show them upon request before entering a home or business.

January 5, 2024 - Due to damage to a third-party pipeline, CenterPoint Energy is experiencing a natural gas outage in northeast Texas in the towns of Center and Shelbyville. The service outage is affecting more than 1,500 customers. The damaged pipeline is not owned or operated by CenterPoint Energy.

For safety reasons, the company urges customers not to turn any valves or tamper with the natural gas meter. Opening or turning any valves could allow air to enter the natural gas lines, which would hinder the restoration process.

January 6, 2023 - Shelby County Today has had reports from natural gas customers in Center stating their gas has been turned back on.
According to Luciana Barr, Emergency Management Coordinator for Shelby County, CenterPoint has repaired the gas leak. They are currently going door to door to turn back on the gas. Someone must be at home as they go door to door to turn on gas. They will be checking for leaks.
January 6, 2024 - Gas Pipeline has been repaired and gas pressure is back at full capacity to all City of Huxley customers.

January 5, 2024 - The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers arrested a Shelby County man on Monday, January 1, 2024, on multiple firearm and drug charges following a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 96, south of Center.

The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 2:42pm, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office informed officers to be on the lookout for a silver Dodge Dually pickup traveling south, that had run off the roadway and struck multiple construction barrels. Troopers located the pickup and conducted a traffic stop. A search of the pickup yielded one shot gun, two rifles, a handgun and multiple drugs, including mushrooms, methamphetamines, marijuana and amphetamine pills. A check of the driver’s license confirmed him to be a convicted felon and he was subsequently placed under arrest.

The driver, identified as Brad Broussard, 42, of Shelby County, was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, unlawful carrying of a weapon by a felon with conviction, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 2, all felony offenses. Additional charges were filed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens.

January 5, 2024 - On December 29, 2023, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality required the N.E.W. Water Supply, #2030034, to issue a Boil Water Notice to inform customers, individuals or employees that due to conditions which occurred recently in the public water system, the water from this public water system was required to be boiled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes.
N.E.W. Water Supply has taken the necessary corrective actions to restore the quality of the water distributed by this public water system used for drinking water or human consumption purposes. We have also provided TCEQ with laboratory test results that indicate that the water no longer requires boiling prior to use as of January 5, 2024.

December 29, 2023 - Due to a mechanical issue at Plant 1, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has required the N.E.W. Water Supply Corporation PWS # 2030034 to notify all customers on FM 711, CR 202, CR 203, CR 205, CR 223, Harmony, Kellyville, Fountain Town and Woodland Acres Communities to boil their water prior to consumption (eg., washing hands/ face, brushing teeth, drinking, etc). Children, seniors and persons with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to harmful bacteria, and all customers should follow these directions.
To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes.
In lieu of boiling, individuals may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source for drinking water or human consumption purposes.
When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, the public water system officials will notify customers that the water is safe for drinking water or human consumption purposes.
Once the boil water notice is no longer in effect, the public water system will issue a notice to customers that rescinds the boil water notice in a manner similar to this notice.
Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received the notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
