Rams Slow Wolves’ Offense to Take Home Field Win

The Joaquin Rams varsity football team took sole possession of second place, in District 11 Class 2A-1 play, with a 49-27 home win over the San Augustine Wolves last Friday. Joaquin has now boosted their season mark to 6-3 overall. San Augustine fell to 5-4, as both teams came into the contest with identical 5-3 season standings. The Rams are now 6-3 overall this season while the Wolves fell to 5-4. The Rams are 3-1 in conference play, while the Wolves are 2-2. Carlisle leads the conference with a 4-0 league mark and an unblemished 9-0 season tally.

Tray Wilkerson capped a 70-yard Rams' scoring drive, with a 1-yard run, to start the night’s scoring with 7:25 left in the opening period. The Ram’s extra point attempt failed, giving Joaquin a 6-0 advantage early on.

The Rams went up 13-0 on a 22-yard scoring run by Peyton Martinez with 2:38 left in the opening stanza. Kase Yates added the 2-point conversion to boost the JHS lead to 14-0.

Hunter Gates then raced 34-yards around the left end on a scoring run, with a minute left in the opening period to give Joaquin a  20-0 lead. 

The Wolves cut the score to 20-7 on K.J. Davis 6-yard touchdown run with 10:17 left in the first half of play. 

The Rams bounced back on a Kase Yates' 6-yard touchdown run with 39 seconds left before the halftime intermission. Gates' added a 2-point conversation run which gave JHS a 28-7 advantage. After a 67-yard kick return, the Wolves’ Kenneth Davis Jr., added a 5-yard touchdown to boost the halftime score to 28-13 in Joaquin’s favor.

Kase Yates scored again with 6:04 left in the third frame, on a 2-yard scoring run with 1:50 left to bring the score to 34-13.;

Yates added a 12-yard scoring run to start the fourth stanza, giving the Rams a 41-13 advantage.

San Augustine next scored on a 27-yard Davis touchdown reception with 10:31 left in the game to cut the Ram’s lead to twenty points, at 41-21.

Joaquin boosted their lead to 49-21 on a Hunter Gates' 5-yard scoring run with 4:46 left in the contest.

San Augustine added a touchdown for the game’s final score on a 4-yard Davis run to pull to within 49-27.

The Rams totaled 339 yards of offense. They rushed for 325 yards and went 1/1 passing for 14 yards. The Wolves totaled 204 yards, 61 yards rushing and 143 passing and completed 15 of 21 passes. Joaquin had six penalties for 60 yards. San Augustine was penalized five times for 57 yards. The Rams had the advantage in first-downs with 13, to the Wolves’ nine.

Joaquin will travel to Cushing next Friday, November 4 for the season’s final district contest with the Bearkats at 7:30 p.m.
