Lady Roughriders Steal Win Over Jacksonville

December 1, 2016 – The Center Lady Roughriders Basketball Team trailed, from the 5 minute mark of the first period, until there was only 40 seconds remaining in the final stanza, but took away a 50-46 win on Tuesday. Center out-scored the Jacksonville Lady Indians 5-0 in the final seconds to gain the win at home.

Jada Hicks scored a bucket which gave Center an early 2-0 lead. JaKayla Weathered gave Center their second lead with a 3-point bomb which gave CHS a 4-3 advantage with 5-minutes left in the opening frame, but the Lady Indians soon after gained the lead, and did not relinquish it until the later stages of the contest. Mekayla Hubbard hit a shot before the buzzer which pulled Center to within 10-14 of the Lady Indians at the end of the first period.

Center trailed by as much as five points in the second stanza but late scores by Hubbard, Hicks, and BreAunna Hightower pulled CHS to within 21-23 of Jacksonville by the halftime intermission.

A Hicks score with 4:05 left in the third period tied the game at 33-33 but JHS gained a bucket from Madison Franklin and took a 35-33 lead into the final stanza.

Center trailed until there was less than one minute remaining in the contest and got a key bucket from Malaisha Cartwright. They saw key free throws made by Cartwright, Nichols, and Hubbard which helped CHS out-pace Jacksonville by 5-0 points to gain the narrow 50-46 win. This was Centers first home win of the season. They stand at 1-3 in early season play.

In Junior Varsity action Center fell behind 6-13 late in the second period and trailed 6-16 at halftime.

By the end of the third frame Center saw the Lady Indians enjoying a 24-10 lead. The Lady Roughriders cut the Lady Indians lead to just 27-24, with only 1 minute left in the contest, but JHS held on for a 31-26 win.
