Bears, Lady Bears Play in Gary Invitational Basketball Tournament

December 9, 2016 Gary Bobcats Gymnasium - The Timpson Bears and Lady Bears Varsity Basketball teams started competing in the Gary Invitational Basketball Tournament last Thursday morning at Gary High School Gymnasium.

The Bears tipped off in the tournament’s first game with the hometown Gary Bobcats. The Bobcats were able to get the upper hand early and used 20 first-half points, by Cason Daniels, to gain a 34-11 lead by the 2-minute mark of the second period. Gary began to patiently milk the clock and held a 37-11 lead at the midway intermission.

Six third-quarter points by Gary postman Landon Odom helped GHS outpace Timpson 11-7 in the third stanza. Gary’s lead had grown to 48-18 by the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Timpson was able to outscore the Bobcats by a 7-0 margin in the final period but it was a case of too-little-too- late as the Bobcats were able to take away a 48-25 home tourney win.

The Bears were led offensively with 7 points by Jaden Johnson and 6 points by Jordan Osby.

Gary got 23 points from Cason Daniels, 10 points by Austin Martin, and Landon Odom had 6.

The Bears are slated to play the winner of Wells and Beckville, at GHS, at 2:10 p.m. on Friday.

The Lady Bears faced the Central Lady Bulldogs in tournament play Thursday morning and were ultimately able to advance into the winner’s bracket after defeating the Lady ‘Dogs 40-29.

Timpson held a narrow 6-5 lead after the conclusion of the first period. At halftime the game was knotted at 15-15. Ten third-quarter points scored in a team effort by Jasmine Rodgers, Brylee Behrens, Ashton Harris, and Ja’Karia Deckard helped THS gain a 25-20 lead going into the final period.

Rodgers and Deckard combined to score 13 points in the final period which helped THS out-score Central 13-9 to help the Lady Bears win by the 11-point (40-29) margin.

The Lady Bears were led by Ja’Karia Deckard with 14 points, Jasmine Rodgers added 12, and Brylee Behrens chipped in 9 points.

Timpson plays at 7:50 p.m. at GHS, on Thursday. They will face the winner of the Mount Enterprise and West Sabine game.
