Dragons Gain Home Court Win Over Tigers

December 17, 2016 Shelbyville Dragons Gymnasium – The Shelbyville Dragons Varsity Basketball Team boosted their 2016-17 record to 10-2 with a convincing 59-38 win over the West Sabine Tigers (4-8) last Friday. The Junior Varsity boys won by a similar score of 59-39.

During varsity play, early 3-pointers by Dragons Ryan Bailey and Corey Bearden, and a tip-in by Jacovian Buckley, helped SHS go up 15-6 by the conclusion of the first period.

Jordan Boykins hit a 3-pointer to start the second stanza and gave Shelbyville 18-6 lead with 7:44 remaining before halftime. SHS ultimately outscored the Tigers 11-10 in the second period and took a 26-16 lead into the locker room at the midway break.

Boykins hit a 3-pointer to put Shelbyville up 29-16 at the beginning of the second half but Tiger Blake Ponder countered with a 3-pointer of his own, just moments later, to pull WSHS to within 19-29 with 7:11 left in the third period. Three buckets by Bearden later in the third stanza helped Shelbyville gain a 42-26 lead going into the final quarter of play.

Twelve points by Boykins in the final period helped the Dragons pull away to the 21-point victory. Boykins, a 6’3” freshman, led the Dragons with 23 points during the night.

The Dragons Varsity will play the Wolves at San Augustine High School on December 20, at 7 p.m.
