Tenaha Holiday Hoops Day 2 Action Recap

Tenaha High School – Thursday, December 29, 2016

On Thursday, the Timpson Lady Bears basketball team fell to the Martinsville Lady Pirates by a 59-51 final score, on Thursday, during consolation bracket play of Tenaha’s Holiday Hoops tournament, but not without a hard fought battle. The Lady Bears got seven first-quarter points from Brylee Behrens which helped THS hold a 14-13 lead at the conclusion of the first period of play. Timpson teammate McKenzie Burgay scored nine points in the second period which helped the Lady Bears take a 31-26 advantage into the locker room by the midway break. Behrens led the Lady Bears with 17 total points on the night.

Two 3-point buckets from Martinsville’s Kaitlyn Revill helped the Lady Pirates knot the score at 40-40 at the end of the third period. Eight points by each Revill and Haley Moon helped the Lady Pirates outscore Timpson 19-11 in the final period.

The Lady Bears got 11 points from Sara Duke, Burgay had nine, Ashton Harris, five, and JaKaria Deckard added two points to the THS tally. Revill led the Lady Pirates with 18 points on the night.

The Tenaha Lady Tigers got a pair of wins over Carthage and Dodd City high schools.  Thursday morning saw the Lady Tigers take a 19-4 lead over the Carthage Lady Bulldogs by the 4:27 mark of the first period. Bianca Davison scored seven first-quarter points in route to a team high 22 point mark.

By halftime Tenaha had gained a lopsided 29-11 advantage. The Lady Tigers led 41-24 by the end of the third stanza and ultimately took the win by outscoring CHS 57-37 by game’s end.

Bianca Davison and Arlicia Roland led the Lady Tigers with 21 points each.

The Lady Tigers next advanced to face the Dodd City Lady Hornets in an evening championship qualifying game between top ranked 1A and 2A teams. Class 2A Tenaha took a hard-fought 52-45 win.

The game was fast paced and was close virtually throughout the contest. Tenaha led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 23-21 at the midway break. Ten third-quarter points by Bianca Davison helped THS gain a 36-34 advantage by the end of the third stanza. Davison had a game-high 19 points on the night and hit 5 3-pointers. Brooke McClure and Arlicia Roland teamed up for five points each in the final period to help the Lady Tigers outpace DCHS by a 16-11 margin and gain the win. Paige Granstaff led the Lady Hornets with 13 points.

The Lady Tigers will face Martin’s Mills High School in the Championship Final game at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Special Events Center at THS.

The Shelbyville Dragons defeated the Elysian Fields Yellow Jackets by a 62-43 score during a consolation bracket matchup on Thursday afternoon at Tenaha Tigers Gymnasium.

In a physical fast-paced game which saw the two teams combine for 25 free-throw attempts during the first period alone, both teams headed to the second period of play with the score knotted at 11-11.

Eleven second-quarter points by Dragons freshman Jordan Boykins helped Shelbyville begin to distance themselves and take a 33-21 lead into the locker room at the midway intermission.

The Dragons were able to ultimately take the 62-43 and advance to play White Oak High School at Tenaha’s SEC at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 30.

The Joaquin Lady Rams advanced forward in consolation bracket play by defeating the Slocum Lady Mustangs 45-33 Thursday afternoon. Junior post player, Day’za Lane led Lady Rams’ scorers with 19 points and pulled down 21 rebounds. The Lady Rams led 7-3 at the end of the first period and 19-12 at the end of the first half of play. They outscored Slocum 12-5 in the third stanza and took a 31-17 advantage into the final frame.

Slocum was able to out-pace JHS 16-14 points in the final stanza but it was too-little-too-late as the Lady Rams took the win and advanced on to face Centerville at 12 p.m. at Tenahas’ SEC on Friday for a fifth place matchup.

The Tenaha Tiger took on the San Augustine Wolves on Thursday night and took a 68-43 win which will send them to Friday’s Holiday Hoops Tournament Finals for the first time.

Eight points in the first period by Tiger JaQualin Franks helped Tenaha take a 16-7 lead into the second period. Both teams scored fifteen points in the second period and Tenaha held a 31-22 lead at halftime.

The Tigers out-paced the Wolves 19-11 in the third frame and took a 50-33 lead into the final period of play. Tenaha, once again, outscored San Augustine in the final quarter (18-10 points) and they cruised to the 25-point win. JaQualin Franks and Cody Foshee led the Tigers with 13 points each. Trai Gardner had 12 points. Q. Border led the Wolves with 10 points.
