Tenaha Takes 57-40 Win Over San Augustine in District Finale

The Tenaha Tigers ended their 2017-18 Varsity Basketball season with a 57-40 conference win over the San Augustine Wolves. This gave the Tigers an 11-1 District 22 2A mark and a co-championship for the conference. The Tigers will now enter the post-season as the #1 playoff seed after they won a coin-toss with Shelbyville.

The Tigers started slow and trailed the Wolves 8-1 with five minutes left in the opening period. They battled back and they fought to pull within 8-12 by the end of the opening frame.

The second quarter saw Tiger Trai Gardner score three consecutive buckets to give the Tigers their first lead (19-18) with 5:10 left in the first half. Tenaha took a narrow 26-24 lead into the locker room for the midway break.

The Tigers were able to extend their lead throughout the second half. They led 41-29 after three quarters, and extended that 12-point lead to 57-40 by game’s end. This extended the Tiger’s season mark to 18-2.

Leading the Tigers’ attack was Trai Gardner with 21 points, Cody Foshee had 14, Jay Lloyd 12, Erik Smith 4, Hayden Jenkins 3, and Tavoris Giles scored three as well.

San Augustine was led by Justin Jenkins with 13 points.

Tenaha will face New Summerfield in the Bi-District Round of the UIL Playoffs. The New Summerfield Hornets are the Fourth Place Seed of District 21 2A. Time and place for the first-round playoff is still pending.
